Tire Purchasing Tips
- Examine tires for defects.
-
When purchasing tires, read and compare warranties as well as price. If you are buying seconds or recaps, there is usually no warranty.
-
Ask what is included in the price of the tire: tire stems, mounting, balancing, etc. If not included, what is the price of the tire after add-ons?
-
If purchasing road hazard warranty, make sure you understand what is and what is not covered under the policy. Get it in writing.
-
Carefully review advertisements. Read fine print to learn what is included in the sale price. Find out if sale price applies to carry outs or only if tires installed. What is the final price, after installation?
-
If there is only a limited quantity of advertised merchandise, this fact must be disclosed in the advertisement or the advertiser must provide a means by which you may obtain the item at the sale price, within a reasonable time, i.e., rain checks.
-
Florida law requires a $1.00 per new tire waste tire disposal fee. This fee is collected at the time the tire is purchased and is subject to tax. There is a similar $1.50 fee on lead-acid batteries.
-
As with any other repair work, whenever possible, seek a second opinion before authorizing additional mechanical repairs to your vehicle.
-
Before making any purchase, call the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, 1-800-HELP-FLA(435-7352), to obtain the complaint history of the business.
